Carbon Footprint Across the Coffee Supply Chain: The Case of Costa Rican Coffee

ثبت نشده
چکیده

The issue of carbon emissions has been on the corporate sustainability agenda for some years. For those working in agricultural supply chains the challenges remain significant, given the diverse direct and indirect emissions occurring throughout the value chain. This study determines the carbon footprint of the supply chain of Costa Rican coffee exported to Europe, using best practice methodology to calculate greenhouse gas emissions. Overall it was found that the total carbon footprint across the entire supply chain is 4.98 kg CO2e/kg green coffee. The carbon footprint of the processes in Costa Rica to produce 1 kilogram of green coffee is 1.93 kg CO2e. The processes within Europe generate 3.05 CO2e/kg green coffee. This carbon footprint is considered as “very high intensity”. This paper also identifies the sources of the most intense emission and discusses mitigation possibilities on which efforts must be focused.

Coffee consumption as a factor in iron deficiency anemia among pregnant women and their infants in Costa Rica.

The influence of coffee consumption on hematological and trace element status was studied in two groups of pregnant, low-income Costa Rican women: coffee drinkers (greater than or equal to 450 mL/d, n = 22) and coffee nondrinkers (0 mL/d, n = 26). Groups had similar income, education, prenatal care, age, parity, weight, height, pregnancy weight gain, prenatal iron supplementation, energy, prote...

Forest bolsters bird abundance, pest control and coffee yield.

Efforts to maximise crop yields are fuelling agricultural intensification, exacerbating the biodiversity crisis. Low-intensity agricultural practices, however, may not sacrifice yields if they support biodiversity-driven ecosystem services. We quantified the value native predators provide to farmers by consuming coffee's most damaging insect pest, the coffee berry borer beetle (Hypothenemus ham...

The Stabilising and Chelating Effects of Green and Roasted Coffee Extracts

ABSTRACT: Oxidation might be regarded as one of the most important reaction in oils and fats. Prooxidants namely iron and copper intensify and catalyze the oxidation while the chelating agents might retard or delay this process. Citric acid, phosphoric acid, some of phenolic compounds and phospholipids are considered as the compounds that chelate the prooxidant metals and through this mechanism...
